The television isn’t the only source for news anymore….
Journalism is the conveying of news through media such as radio, television internet by a broadcast presenter. Before only some people could or knew how to share the information to the general public. Journalism started in about 18th Century europe through such things as the printing press that allowed mass production of newspapers. Before journalists could find out about important events and photograph and write about them the way they would like to with their own biases and ideas in the article. It was not as if any normal person could walk around with a camera and write what they felt about in certain events. cameras and printing and such materials were very expensive back then.Newspapers were usually concentrated to a certain region it wasnt like the Modesto Bee would be read in Europe. With the start of the 20th Century new technology started appearing and making the process to obtain and share news became much more easier and reading the Modesto Bee from Europe was really possible. Broadcasters began to appear on televion at the sites of where the news was happening. Trasmitting the news LIVE was a much better way to present to people and for information to get across more smoothly and correctly. As time has progress sharing news has broken geographical boundaries, today we are able to share any type of news with people across the globe with the invention of the internet. Not only that but, now not just professional broadcasters, photographers or writers can portray the news. With new technology such as Video/digital cameras and the internet anyone can find something they find to be important to the public and be able to share it with as big or small of an audience as they choose.
There have been so many advancements in media and the way we can share it. Cameras are a big part of journalism I believe especially when dealing with newspapers. Cameras have changed so much tough from having to be developed from film to being able to print and share your pictures very quickly by just connecting your camera to your computer. With new technology Digital cameras are not only better for faster sharing but also have better details. The internet has been spread more and more it has become cost effective and most people can have a connection to a computer and an internet connection. Cell phones and their new technology have also become very widespread most phones have cameras and even video cameras. All these new technologies have led to a rise in citizen journalism.
With modern technology anyone can participate in citizen journalism by writting in blogs, online forums, uploading digital photos with important significance and writing about them and even uploading videos with sites such as youtube. Technology has advanced so much that any average person can capture or write about news and distribute it worldwide. Citizen journalism I think this is very important tool we now have it helps us have more information around the world. News that you might care about might not always make the local breaking news story or your local newspaper. With citizen journalism though, other journalists might think some news is as important to be informed about and then you will be able to be informed as well when they upload their information and share it with anyone that would like to read it.
Citizen journalism is a very controversial term. Many professional journalists feel that only professionals know the rigors and ethics involved with reporting news to an audience. But their are also professional journalists who practice citizen journalism with blogs and such things. The only difference would be that they are trained professionals then right? I believe so, since I think we all have a right to share news that we think is important, and hiding important information from people sometimes is as bad as lying.
Citizen journalism is very reliable I belive source of information as it is growing and growing. Press has often been accused for framing the news. Also professional journalists have to deal with censorship from companies that makes them have to edit their content in the news they share. Many news channels have took the idea of citizen journalism and have worked with it. Such as having a hotline were people can call in when they know were news is happening and they help in that way or they can send in pictures that relate to events and use them that way.
One very new innovation that I think will boost how much people read and participate in citizen journalism will be the iPhone 3G S. This a phone with new technology that has the ability to record and send your videos straight to youtube to share the news with the rest of the world. So many eyewitnesses will be able to share their information and capture news live with this. I think that with all this advancement of new media. There will be a big increase in citizen journalism in the future.
“Every Citizen is a reporter”, that is the motto for Korean Website Ohmynews it is a Korean website who later then went international. Ordinary people from all around the world can suscribe and write their own articles. Their are not only stories on this site but polls, interviews, and podcasts. I think sites like these are very important. On television and in the radio the things that are said are always revised many times and controlled by censorship. Other sites relating to citizen media is sites such as this one, wordpress.com here many people blog and you can really find information relating to what you are looking for here. Before I was introduced to wordpress and blogging I didnt really know how much ordinary people could contribute to news and information but I have really found out that is a very good tool. It has a video part of wordpress as well and an iphone app for those on the go people. Another site that is very good for sharing information is youtube many citizen journalists share their information here if they recorded it. youtube is very widespread they are now part of apps on iphones which many people have which makes it a great place to put out your information since you would have a big audience.
From its origins of pamphlets to blogging and broadcasting your on videos citizen journalism has became a great tool. We still rely on other types of news but its a good thing that if we ever need deeper information about something or just another source for more news we can rely more on citizen journalism. This type of journalism will of course change throught the years as our technology changes and become easier for us to share information. But.. im sure we will still have news around for a long time, we have learned to rely on our local news broadcasters over the years. They give us good news, weather and tell us about road conditions. Im sure citizen journalism and big news corporations will learn to work alongside one another as many are already starting to do.
These are some videos that I found to be very interesting about citizen journalism. This first one is titled citizen journ vs. traditional journ makes it easy to understand the concept of the these two types of journalism and their similarities and differences. plus its pretty funny I thought.
This other video shows how easy anyone can be able to share their information for it to become breaking news. It is from a company from Finland so I found that to be such good evidence that citizen media is used throughout the world
This other video I would like to share actually goes into the history of citizen journalism and what it is now. It also does good of explaining it in a different way than the first video but gets some of the same information across.
